Writing 101 – First Assignment

It’s time for me to write. I have 20 minutes to write anything at all as an exercise in Writing 101 by Word Press.

I’ve been very tired today. I’ve been trying to boost my energy by doing push-ups on the stairs and, my mind has gone completely blank… Squats, that’s it. I’m aiming for 20 repetitions of each exercise at a time and my goal is 100 reps every day of each exercise. Once I’ve achieved this I can them make it more difficult by using weights when I do squats and lower stairs for the push-ups until I can do them on the ground. Day at a time, girl…

What to write about now? I’d like to write short stories. I have no idea what the subject matter should be. I do have some resources such as this Writing 101 and some writing books to help me get started and then develop a style and find a creative spark. I wonder if meditation may help?

I usually think of nothing when I meditate which isn’t that often. I wonder if I could try meditating on a creative idea? For example, I was in Specsavers the other day to collect my new specs and I remembered a task in a writing course about making up a story about some people you see while out and about.

I saw an elderly couple while in Specsavers. They were both wearing baseball caps which is unusual in England, for elderly people to be wearing. I began thinking that maybe the guy was American and he had met his future wife while serving in the US Army during World War II and stationed in England before deployment to the battlefield. I could take that basic idea and create a detailed backstory.

Where did they meet, specifically? How old were they? What was his rank? What corps? What was her job? Who were their friends? Why did their initial attraction develop into marriage, which was lifelong, rather than he just going home without her? Did he or they ever go back to the USA?

What happened after the war? Where did they live? What employment did they have? Did they have children? If so, how many? What were their names? What were they like. Do they have grandchildren?

Can I spend time meditating on these questions and imagine a detailed lifestory for the two of them and any children and grandchildren?

Maybe it is time to give it a shot.

(Oooo you’re halfway there, Oh Wo! Livin’ on a prayer) 🙂
